The World Cancer Congress is an international conference organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) every two years. Research papers will be presented at the WCC meet by Prof Ashok Kumar Das, Dr Manigreeva Krishnatreya and Manoj Kalita, all from the BBCI.

While smokeless tobacco is a risk factor for high incidence of throat cancer in Assam, Prof Das will present a research paper on the same. On the other hand, Dr Krishnatreya will present a paper on cancer in patients in the nineties age group. The expenditure for attending the conference for Prof Das and Dr Krishnatreya will be borne by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.

On the other hand the expenditure to be incurred by Kalita will be borne by International Travel Grant based on merit from the Indian Council of Medical Research. His paper will highlight the patients in late stages.

It may be recalled that the first International Cancer Congress was held in Madrid in 1933, followed by the formation of the International Union Against Cancer in 1935 which was renamed as the Union for International Cancer Control in 2010.

Meanwhile, Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, Director of BBCI, has pointed out that it is for the first time that three research papers from the institute will be presented in the WCC. The meet provides the doctors and researchers the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and connect with other UICC members from all around the world, Dr Kataki informed.
