GUWAHATI: The BJP and the Congress in Assam have already started their search of probable candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP that has seven MPs from Assam is a few steps ahead of the Congress in this regard.
Leaders of the BJP have been interacting with social leaders, intellectuals and others on issues like what kind of candidates can ensure their win in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party is also reviewing performances of its sitting MPs at the national level, including those from Assam. According to sources, the party is not at all happy with the performances of two or three Assam MPs. The party is assessing their performances, besides their relations with the public. Such assessments have much to do on the issuance of party tickets.
The Congress, on the other hand, has different assessment criteria. As of now, the party is not reviewing the performance of its sitting MPs. Rather it has laid stress on the parliamentary seats that are held by the BJP or other parties in the State. Their thrust is on candidates who can ensure their victory in parliamentary seats which they are not holding at present.
The Congress has three MPs from Assam in the present Lok Sabha.
