GUWAHATI: Minister for PWD and Finance Himanta Biswa Sarma attended a tree plantation programme at the Old Circuit House here.

Addressing the media, Sarma said, “The PWD and the Assam government have decided to plant trees at every construction site so that on the day of completion of any new building we can see grown up trees. The company engaged in the construction will be looking after the plants. We’ve already implemented this programme at Lakhimpur Medical College, Tinsukia Medical College, Nalbari Medical College and so on. Today, we’re planting trees here in this campus, and we’ll plant a total of 400 plants in this campus.”

Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that they will try to save the old trees as much as they can, but the one that will come amidst the construction cannot be saved. When asked on the report prepared by the CAG, Sarma said, “During the Congress government the expenditure was only 42% of the total budgetary allocation and it is certain that no government can spend more than 70%. But in the report released by the CAG it is written that the BJP government has reached up to 65%-66%. So, in these three years a huge difference of Rs. 30,000 crore has been seen. We spent Rs. 70,000 crore yearly against Rs 42,000 crore yearly by the Congress government. Thus the success of the BJP government has been reflected in the CAG Report. We’ve met the national standard too”.

Himanta Biswa Sarma added that everyone will know as to how the government spent the money on the floor of the Assembly on Monday. ‘If a poor state like Assam spends more than Rs. 70,000 crore to Rs. 80,000 crore the government will have to hike tax, including on petrol, rice, and such other goods,” said Sarma.
