Can there be peace in ‘BTR’ if Assam is unrest? Asks Former CM Tarun Gogoi

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: “How can the proposed BTR be peaceful when there is unrest in Assam as a whole?” Former Chief Minister Tarun has questioned the BJP government at the Centre.

Addressing a press conference in his official residence here on Saturday, Gogoi said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that the Bodo Accord will usher in peace in the Bodoland. This amply means that the Bodoland region wasn’t peaceful earlier. BTC CEM (Chief Executive Member) Hagrama Mohilary should make it a point that during this tenure there was no peace and development in the BTAD.”

Taking a dig at Hagrama Mohilary’s statement that in the past four years what the Bodos have got is much more than what they got during the 15-year-Congress rule, Gogoi said, “Even as an ally of the BJP, Hagrama says that he’ll be with one who has the power in hand. Nobody can predict whose darling he will be tomorrow. We’re elated at the Bodo Accord. However, the majority of people in the proposed BTR aren’t happy with the Accord. They’ve submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking review of the Accord. Sugar-coated words cannot bring peace in Assam. Only the withdrawal of the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) can restore peace in the State. What the Prime Minister said yesterday makes it clear that he’s not at all accountable to Assam. He has created unrest in the State by enacting the CAA.”

Gogoi further said, “What have we got during Modi’s tenure as the Prime Minister? Two HPC mills have been closed. It’s a blatant lie that in the past five years the Centre has pumped in Rs 3 lakh crore to the Northeast. The total budgetary allocation for the region was Rs 2,63,596 crore, and of them, only Rs 2,30,646 crore was released. We've deprived of Rs 32,950 crore. I doubt if he will implement all that he promised at Kokrajhar on Friday.”
