Citizenship Amendment Act: Mid-day meal worker shaves off hair in protest

GUWAHATI: Opposing the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and demanding hike in salary from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 9600 per month a mid-day meal worker shaved off her head in Guwahati. The original schedule of the protest was mass tonsure by mid-day meal workers at Chachal protest ground here near the VIP Road on Friday. However, the police drove the barber brought by the protesters away. The adviser of the All Assam Primary and Upper Primary Schools’ Midday Meal Cook and Helpers’ Association, Trishna Nath, however, got her hair shaved off in a nearby saloon.

The mid-day meal workers allege that the government has showed no concern to solve their problems and that has led them to take such a step. They further said that they will send a memorandum to the Governor on January 17, and if they find any more negligence on the part of the government they will be compelled to stage a nude protest in New Delhi.

Trishna Nath, the adviser of the association, said, “What will the mid-day meal workers do with just Rs. 1,000 as monthly salary? Besides regularization of our jobs we demand the government to increase our salary from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 9,600 per month. We’ve decided to go to New Delhi in February, and if the government shows no concern this time we'll stage a nude protest, and Chief Sarbananda Sonowal will be fully responsible for this. Today we had to sacrifice our hair, regarded as the most essential component of a woman. It’s unfortunate that we have come to such a pass. This sacrifice is not just for the sake of securing the life of mid-day meal workers, but to save our motherland as well.”
