GUWAHATI: Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement about solving the flood and erosion problem of the State if the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) comes to power.

"Why will anyone believe Shah's words after the Centre has been betraying Assam regarding the flood crisis," said Bordoloi.

Further, the MP highlighted the flood assistance package of Rs 2,650 crore for the North East that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, 2017.

He said, "Out of the total funds, PM Modi stated that Rs 400 crore will be immediately released for Assam to solve the flood and erosion problem. He announced additional Rs 100 crore to conduct a study on the behavior of the Brahmaputra River. However, none of those funds were released," Bordoloi alleged."

"The Prime Minister didn't keep his promises, why will the people believe the Union Home Minister?" questioned Bordoloi.

He asserted that during the Congress regime in the State, it appealed to the Centre to declare flood as a national problem.

"Following the State government's appeal, the Congress-led government in Centre introduced a flood management programme. Under the programme, funds were allocated on a yearly basis to solve the flood problems. But, when the BJP came to power, the funds were stopped," Bordoloi alleged.

Lastly, slamming Shah's statement of the BJP making Assam 'bullet and violence free', Bordoloi questioned why the AFSPA Act has been extended for another six months in the State.
