GUWAHATI: To make the masses aware about the responsibility of casting vote, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Biswajeet Pegu has decided to hold awareness camps around the city. Special emphasis has been placed to make the younger generation conscious about the importance of exercising their franchise.
A press meet was held by the DC Biswajeet Pegu on Thursday, where Election Department Deputy Secretary Pankaj Chakraborty, along with Student Union Body of JB Law College, B Borooah College, Cotton University, Assam Engineering College, Pragjyotish College, Guwahati Medical College, Guwahati Commerce College and Arjya Vidyapeeth, were present.
The DC talked at length about the importance of casting votes and how it affects the nation as a whole in choosing the right leaders. “People should take the opportunity to come out and exercise their franchise, instead of treating Election Day as a break day. If the right leaders are chosen, the complaints might also end”, he informed. He further stated that an ambassador will be appointed in every college to educate students about the importance of voting.
The DC also informed that no voters slip will be provided this year and if any new voters fail to receive their cards, there should not be any cause of concern or panic as there are 11 other options to establish their identity proofs.
Pankaj Chakraborty said that to increase awareness about voting, a ‘Run for Vote’ rally will be organized from Latasil Field at 7.30 am on March 11. “We will also hold an awareness quiz on March 17, where students from every district, including XI and XII standard students, can also participate. Cash prize will be provided to the winners with Rs 25 thousand for the First Prize winner, Rs 15 thousand for the Second Prize winner and Rs 10 thousand for the third prize winner”, informed Chakraborty.
