GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) Debabrata Saikia has asked if the schemes taken up for boosting inland water transport in the State ever see light of the day.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Saikia said, "In 2014 Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a bridge would be constructed connecting Majuli. Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari then laid its foundation stone. However, in the past five year not even a single post has been erected.

"In 2017, Gadkari announced a package of Rs 1,250 crore for the development of the inland water transport in Assam. This apart, the State government took a loan amounting to Rs 650 crore from the World Bank for boosting inland water transport in the State. Even after getting around Rs 1,900 crore, why are parghats, electrification facilities, rest houses at parghats in the State not developed?" he questioned
