Debabrata Saikia urges CM Sarbananda Sonowal to roll back move

AHSEC's decision to drop chapter on Nehru from syllabi

GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition of the State Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has opposed the move of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) to drop the chapter relating to first Prime Minister of India Jawharlal Nehru from the syllabi. The Council is shrinking the syllabi by 30 per cent because of the class loss during the corona pandemic.

In a letter sent to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday Saikia urged Sonowal to instruct the AHSEC to retain certain chapters pertaining to the policies and contribution of India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, which the Council has decided to drop from the curriculum for Class-XI and Class-XII in view of academic sessions curtailed due to the COVID pandemic.

Saikia stated that any move to ease the workload of students was welcome in the abnormal situation created by COVID-19. However, he pointed out that the choice of which chapters to drop was questionable.

Saikia asserted that Pandit Nehru continues to garner global respect for spearheading the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War. Even political opponents like Bharat Ratna Atal Behari Vajpayee and the incumbent Defence Minister Rajnath Singh publicly acknowledged Pandit Nehru's unparalleled contribution to nation building and nurturing of democratic values.
