Drive against helmetless riders in Guwahati

In view of the rising number of road accidents involving two-wheelers, the Kamrup Metro district transport office (enforcement wing) on Wednesday launched a massive drive against helmetless riders and pillion riders

GUWAHATI: In view of the rising number of road accidents involving two-wheelers, the Kamrup Metro district transport office (enforcement wing) on Wednesday launched a massive drive against helmetless riders and pillion riders in Ganeshguri and Chandmari area of the city. During the drive many persons were found violating the rules and action was initiated against the violators. The department registered 277 cases of offences and on-the-spot fines amounting to Rs 46,000 were realized from them. District Transport Officer Himangshu Kumar Das who led the drive said that the drive has been initiated against both helmetless riders and pillion riders and added that the drive will continue in the coming days.

During the drive the enforcement department also distributed roses to helmetless riders and pillions to spread awareness on the importance of safe riding.

Welcoming the move, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the two-wheeler riders must diligently follow the road safety rules. He said that in view of rising road accidents on the last day of the year, no motorcycles will be allowed to drive above the 60-km speed on December 31.
