Elections 2019: Ticket seekers’ Beeline Before Politicians, Parties

2019 LS POLLS

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 2: With only few months left for the country’s general elections, the people from different walks of life have started making parleys with political leaders and visiting party offices in the State to manage tickets to contest the 2019 polls.

Such activities have become prominent in the BJP and AGP circles with prominent personalities from different fields seen making contacts with senior leaders of the ruling parties. Senior IAS officer MGVK Bhanu who recently retired from the Assam Government as Additional Chief Secretary, on Sunday met former Chief Minister and senior AGP Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in the city ostensibly to discuss about the former’s plan to contest the next year’s election from Tezpur.

Even though Bhanu refused to speak more about his meeting with Mahanta, sources said the former bureaucrat is maintaining close contacts with several senior leaders of the AGP with a plan to manage the ticket for the Tezpur constituency.

With the BJP and AGP are going to retain their pre-poll alliance for the next year’s elections the ticket aspirants are going all out to convince and please leaders of both the parties about their eligibility. Though the existing Tezpur seat is being represented by the BJP’s RP Sarmah, the party top brass are apparently not very happy with performance of its present incumbent from the constituency. Under such circumstances the AGP is demanding that the seat should be given to its candidate for the next year’s poll. Bhanu is also in the good books of some local top BJP leaders of Tezpur who might favor his candidature.

A BJP leader said the trend of ticket seeking by different individuals has just started and it will make a very interesting turn in days to come with many more surprising faces.
