GUWAHATI: The temporary shacks and establishments set up beside railway tracks have often been the cause of many causalities and illegal operations running under the sly. On Monday, these shacks and establishments were brought down right from Guwahati Railway Station to Bharalamukh, on either side of the railway tracks. However, this is not the first time that such eviction drives by the authorities have been carried out and by the looks of it, will not be the last and yet, they are back up again like weeds.
The area from Paltan Bazaar Railway Station to Shantipur is notorious for various illegal operations with drugs, narcotics and other intoxicants being openly sold and consumed. The local people of the area are much thankful towards the authorities for destructing the temporary establishments.
A local of the area commented, “We are grateful for the action taken but this alone will not help because after a few weeks, the same shacks and shops will be revamped in the exact same locations. As such, a regular mobile duty should be stationed and the entire area barricaded.”
Another resident said, “We see people under intoxication all the time and we have to travel by the route. The entire market should be taken down for good with measures taken that they cannot set it up again.”
