GUWAHATI: The Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samittee, Assam (BASSA) has appealed to the State government to exempt farmers from paying land for ten years.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, BASSA president Prabin Jyoti Kalita said, "Of late, the State government has gone for a three-fold hike in the tax of arable lands in the State. This has been published in the news. This is not at all acceptable. The move has to be rolled back. During the COVID-induced lockdown a large number of youths of the State have returned to Assam. Since the government has not been able to rehabilitate them, most of such youths will have to engage themselves in agricultural activities. The government should encourage such youths to take agriculture as their profession. However, instead of doing that, the State Government has hiked the tax of arable land by three-fold. We want the government to exempt farmers from paying land tax for ten years."
