Congress has no right to question on Floods in Assam: BJP

The State BJP has rubbished a slew of statements made by APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee)

GUWAHATI: The State BJP has rubbished a slew of statements made by APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora on Wednesday that the BJP-led government at Dispur has failed to bring any Central funds for floods in Assam. The ruling party has said that Dispur under the BJP could get more funds for floods from the Centre than what the State had got when the Congress was in power.

Addressing the media at party headquarters here in Thursday, State BJP's chief spokesperson Rupam Goswami said, "The Congress that had been mostly in power in the State has no moral right to raise any question regarding floods in Assam. For the strong steps taken by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal floods in Assam have been declared as a natural calamity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also taken measures to solve the problems of floods through the formation of the North East Water Management Authority (NEWMA)."

On Central funds for floods in the State, Goswami said, "During the Congress-led UPA-1 from 2004-05 to 2008-09 Assam received Rs 1209.18 crore funds under the CRF/SDRF, NCCF/NDRF. Likewise under UPA-2 from 2009-10 to 2013-14, the State received Rs 1,231-crore CRF/SDRF, NCCF/NDRF funds. However, with the BJP-led NDA coming to power at the Centre from 2014-15 to 2018-19 Assam got Rs 2302.62-crore CRF/SDRF, NCCF/NDRF funds. In the last one-and-a-half years during the NDA-2, the State has received Rs 889.10-crore CRF/SDRF, NCCF/NDRF funds. These figures speak as to which government, of UPA or of NDA, pumped in more funds for floods to Assam.
