Former AASU Leader Nireswar Rabha Passes Away in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Former AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) leader and a leader of the Assam Agitation Nireswar Rabha passed away at a city hospital at midnight on Sunday. He leaves behind his wife, two sisters and younger brother Bipul Rabha, the present vice president of the AASU, besides a host of well-wishers.

During the historic Assam Agitation, Nireswar Rabha was the president of the then Guwahati School Students’ Union, besides being the general secretary of the Gopal Boro HS School Students’ Union, Guwahati. He had his schooling in Gopal Boro HS School and college education in Aryavidyapeeth College, Guwahati. During the Assam Agitation he had to suffer torture by the police and paramilitary personnel. He did play a bigger role in the setting up AASU units in the Barak Valley. He was also the vice president of the All Guwahati Students’ Union, besides being associated with the Ganasangram Parishad. He was associated with a number of socio-cultural organizations like as one of the founders of the Greater Ganeshguri Rongali Bihu Sanmilani.

The mortal remains of the former AASU leader was consigned to flames at the Jatia Public Crematorium in Guwahati on Monday in the presence of AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath, adviser in chief Samujjal Bhattacharya, Nikhil Rabha Chantra Sanstha president Ramen Singh Rabha, Sculptor Biren Singh and others. AASU and many other organizations condoled his death.
