GUWAHATI: At 7.30 am on May 27, a group of five youths sold five gold bars to Nayan Dhar, the owner of a jewellery shop named Royal Bengal at Lakhtokia here. In the evening, Dhar came to know that all the five bars are of fake gold. He had paid Rs 10 lakh for the five bars. He then rushed to the Panbazar Police Station and filed a case (291/2020).

With the help of the Crime Branch, Panbazar police nabbed four youths till June 3, and recovered Rs 7.30 lakh. The fifth man is still absconding. The four who have been arrested are – Subrata Das from Hojai, Nasib Ahmed from Six Mile here, Uttam Haldar from Pandu and Promothesh Dihingia from Bamunimaidam here. The Rs 7.30 lakh was recovered from Subrata Das in Hojai. The incident has revealed that fake gold is in the market in Guwahati, maybe in rest of the State as well. All those who have natural inclination for the yellow metal for ornamental or business purposes need to remember the old adage that 'all that glitters is not gold'.

According to police sources, the investigation may reveal bigger fishes being involved in the racket. They, however, refused to divulge more in the interest of the investigation.
