GUWAHATI: Approximately 38 lakh students of Classes-I to VIII of 40,000 government schools across the State will get four pairs of free uniform this academic year. Another significant step initiated under the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission is that for the maiden time the respective uniform for Saturdays will be different as compared to the other five days of the week. The Mission authority has already directed the respective school management committees (SMCs) and the school management development committees (SMDCs) to acquire the uniform for their students before March 20, 2020.

Informing this to The Sentinel on Thursday, an SSA official added, “The amount of Rs 225 crore earmarked for this scheme during 2018-19 could not be utilized owing to a order of the Gauhati High Court that put a halt on spending the amount during that period. So, it was not possible to supply the uniform during the last academic year of 2019.

“However, following the nod of the High Court, we are now in a position to utilize the pending amount of Rs 225 crore along with another equal amount of Rs 225 crore for the present academic year. Hence, each of the students will be getting four uniform at one go this time.”

A new guideline of the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission states that the procurement and distribution of uniform will be for the learners of the Elementary-level. It includes the students from Classes-I to VIII of the government/ provincialized Lower Primary, Upper Primary and Composite schools.

The guideline adds that this year, each child will be provided two pairs of good quality uniforms. While one will be the normal pair, the other has to be worn on Saturdays. This particular uniform comprises a coloured T-shirt with collar and one skirt (for girls)/half pant (for boys). The respective school authorities will choose the colours of the T-shirt and skirts/ half pants. Each pair of uniform will cost Rs 600.
