Gecko seized; one held by police in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The police arrested one Pranab Ranghang from the Basistha area here on Tuesday and seized a gecko from his possession. According to police sources, the arrest was made based on specific information about an attempt to indulge in illegal wildlife trade. The seized Gecko was handed over to the forest department for further proceedings.

It may be mentioned that geckos, especially Tokay geckos, are smuggled due to supposedly having medicinal benefits. Its blood is said to be useful in treating cancer and it is mostly used in some parts of China. According to sources, the price is multiple lakhs of rupees for just one gecko. There is, however, no scientific proof of any supposed curative property of the body fluids of a Tokay gecko or any other gecko.
