Give Due Importance To Assamese: AXX To Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: A delegation of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), led by its president Paramananda Rajbongshi, has told Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to give due importance to the Assamese language.

The AXX delegation met Sonowal in his office chamber on Tuesday evening and let him know their letter to the Prime Minister on the issue of mother tongue.

In its letter, the Axam Xahitya Xabha had requested the Prime Minister to adopt a policy of not recruiting people educated only with English but without any knowledge on their mother tongues. Following the same policy, the AXX delegation said: “Making English, Hindi and mother tongues compulsory in the New Education Policy will affect the development of the regional languages. In Assam, this policy will affect the Assamese language. Because of negligence, the Assamese language is being shrunk in the State.”

The AXX team further said: “The negligence on the part of Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University in publishing Assamese textbooks is a hurdle in the development of Assamese. Non-use of Assamese language by them hinders the development of the language.” After a patient hearing, Sonowal told the delegation to give him a copy of the letter sent by it to the Prime Minister. He also said that he would take up the issue with the vice chancellors of Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University.
