Guwahati Municipal Corporation: 90 NGOs Selected For Waste Collection

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) accumulates 500 tonnes of waste per day. Primary collection of the waste source is through NGOs and a total of 58 NGOs are involved in 31 wards. Now, the 31 wards are divided into 90 parts and 90 NGOs will be engaged for proper door-to-door waste collection. A five tone per day biomethanation cum electric energy plant for segregrated organic municipal solid waste is being constructed at Paltan Bazaar which will be inaugurated on October 2. GMC has engaged IIT, Kharagpur as consultant for preparation of DPR for integrated solid waste management in Guwahati. The recommendations of the DPR include source segregation of waste, improvement of collection system, waste treatment plants, de-centralized compost plant, and construction of sanitary landfill for residual waste. Bin free roads is the new GMC initiative.
