Guwahati not such a smarty city after all with dilapidated roads

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: On the verge of maintaining the label of a Smart City, the roads of Guwahati have a different tale to tell. The dilapidated condition of lane one of Basisthapur, Beltola is brewing trouble for the daily commuters.

According to sources, the road has been under construction since the past year but has come no closer to completion. Many see commuting through this road as a great inconvenience of their everyday life, in some cases even leading to accidents. The condition of this road deteriorates further in rainy season. The rains turn the road slippery making it dangerous for the commuters and pedestrians and most of the times, flood over.

A resident of Beltola commented that they have to face immense hardships as the road is dotted with big potholes and ditches, making walking and driving an ordeal. “The authorities concerned are doing nothing to get this road repaired which is in such pitiable condition for over a year. The old people and pregnant women have it the hardest because they cannot endure the bumpy ride.” A commuter, Seema Kalita complained that during rainy season, the road gets flooded and rickshaw pullers charge double the amount.

“We are facing this inconvenience for a long time now. It’s not like there is no work being done at all but for how long? We all know that it does not take a year to complete a road and this one, in particular, is broken and repaired and the cycle has been repeating for quite some time”, Kalita stated.
