Guwahati: With incessant rains battering Guwahati city since Saturdaythe boundary wall of the Pragjyotish Primary School located in the Geeta Nagar area of the city collapsed on Sunday, giving rise to panic among the local populace. Thankfully, no one was injured as the school has been closed down due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

The collapse of the school wall at the Gharmara Satra Path in Geeta Nagar damaged the houses of local residents Jeevan Nath and Pankaj Goswami. Ironically, the damaged wall had only been constructed recently and locals have alleged that the accident occurred because sub-standard materials had been used in the construction of the wall.

It may be mentioned here that the incessant rains over the past few days have triggered a first wave of floods in Assam and over 10,000 people have been affected thus far. According to that daily report published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 10,801 people in 46 villages across 4 districts -- Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Darrand and Goalpara have been affected by flash floods as of now. In the four affected districts, 13,448 large animals, 4,137 small animals, and 6,200 poultry have also been affected.

Meanwhile, the Jia Bharali river is flowing above danger level in Sonitpur district of Assam. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday stated that he has directed all Deputy Commissioners to set up separate cells to carry out relief and rescue operations expeditiously during flood. He observed that the district administrations have already geared up with all preparations to deal with flood and said that they have been directed to provide all possible support to the people affected by flood.
