GUWAHATI,: Guwahati wildlife division at Deepor Beel organized World Wetlands Day at Tower Camp on Thursday.

Forest and Environment Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary was invited as the chief guest and MLA, West Guwahati LAC, Ramendra Narayana Kalita was the guest of honour. The celebrations started with a cleanliness drive by the forest department in collaboration with the NGO Midway Journey. A small workshop was also held about the types of plastic waste, and segregation of waste at source. As part of the event, several competitions including painting, poster making and slogan writing were held on themes such as 'Protect DeeporBeel, Role of people in conservation of Wetland etc.', to create awareness among the participants.

Students from various schools across Guwahati participated in the event. Birding event and games on environmental education were also held to educate the students. Also, eminent persons like Purnima Devi Burman, K K Sharma, Anwaruddin Choudhary, P C Bhattacharya and Partha Das also participated in the event and spoke about the importance of DeeporBeel, which is the only Ramsar site in Assam. They enlightened the school and college students on how such natural wetlands have ecological importance, and the role played by DeeporBeel in conservation of wildlife and the need to protect, restore and conserve them.

A mime act by the socio-cultural organization 'Nirbak' was enacted to generate awareness on cleanliness around Deepor Beel. The program ended with the distribution of awards to the winners from various competitions and the Chief Guest's call for protection of elephant corridors and restoration of DeeporBeel wetland.
