Hold all-party meet on BTC poll: AIUDF to State Election Commission

GUWAHATI: The current uncertainty over the BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) poll has led AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) to raise the demand for an all-party meeting with the SEC (State Election Commission).

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, AIUDF general secretary Haidar Hussain Bora said, "The State government wants to cancel the BTC election now as the government knows that the people of the BTAD will cast their votes against its failure. The BJP and its ruling allies are scared of such a drubbing. We're surprised at the news report that Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has written a letter to the SEC for the cancellation of the BTC poll.

"Because of the outbreak of corona, the BTC poll couldn't be held for five months and the Council is now under the Governor's Rule. The government should save democracy by holding BTC poll though a special arrangement that can ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols with more polling centres. Election meetings and rallies are going on in the BTAD now. The BTC administration should observe that. Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika, who had criticized the public for violating COVID-19 protocols, held an election rally in the BTAD with blithe disregard to corona protocols. It's unfortunate. Delaying BTC poll will bring development in the BTAD to a grinding halt. We demand the SEC to hold a meeting with various political parties and various organizations in the BTAD on this issue."
