Illegal appointment of Gaon Bura in Assam, 2 Government Officials Arrested

Guwahati: Two government officials have been arrested for allegedly appointing illegally village headmen ( Gaon Bura ) in Assam's South Salmara Mankachar district in 2017-18.

According to CM's SVC Superintendent of police, Rosie Kalita confirmed that Elias Ahmed (Deputy Secretary, Assam Secretariat) and Bikram Aditya Bora (Circle Officer, Kokrajhar) were the two officials involved in the matter.

"We've previously filed a 305-page charge sheet in response to the CM's SVC case number (05/21) for village head employment fraud. We've also opened an investigation into the case under section 173(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code," said Kalita while speaking to the media.

Following an interview on Friday night, we detained two more people in connection with the case today," added SP Rosie Kalita. Both officials were detained and brought before a special court in Guwahati.

According to SP Kalita, the arrested officials were members of the selection committee's board of directors.

Former South Salmara-Mankachar Deputy Commissioner Atika Sultana had been summoned by the CM's SVC for interrogation in connection with the affair.

The Gaon Burahs appointment committee was chaired by Sultana.

On Wednesday, Atika Sultana is expected to have a hernia procedure. We'll question her once she's recovered," said SP Kalita.

Sultana had already come before the CM's SVC for questioning on November 27, 2021. After the name of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, South Salmara-Mankachar district, Saibur Rahman, became implicated in the case, CM' SVC issued a summons to Atika Sultana.

In connection with the disproportionate assets (DA) case, ADC Saibur Rahman had previously been arrested.

The illegal village-head appointment case involved 94 village heads, with 70 head posts in Mankachar and 24 postings in South Salmara.
