Jal Jeevan Mission: More than 13 lakh families will be covered this year

GUWAHATI: Union Jal Shakti Department Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday held a video conference with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and discussed about the status of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the State. Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Department Ratanlal Kataria and PHED Minister of Assam Rihon Daimary also took part in the video conference. Additional Secretary of Union Jal Shakti Department also gave a presentation in the beginning of today's video conference about implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Assam. Notably, Prime Minister Naredra Modi's flagship scheme Jal Jeevan Mission has set a target of providing piped water to every rural household in the country by 2024.

During the conference, the Union Jal Shakti Department Minister urged for expediting the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Assam so that the State could achieve its target. He called for streamlining the grassroot activities so that every rural household in the state could be provided safe drinking water within the stipulated time frame.

According to a release, the Chief Minister apprised the Union Jal Shakti Minister that the concerned department has been working towards achieving the target of providing safe drinking water to 13,15,126 households in the state within the current year through the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission. He informed that the concerned department has been instructed to expediently complete the process. Saying that though the implementation of the scheme has been delayed a little due to flood, erosion, landslide, storm, spread of COVID-19 pandemic etc., the remaining works of the scheme have been directed to be completed by the concerned department on war footing. He also said that Assam's youths returning from different parts of the country due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown would be engaged in the implementation of the scheme.
