Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao need more autonomy: Assam Assembly

GUWAHATI, Oct 5: The Assam Assembly has mooted more importance and autonomy for the twin hill districts of the State – Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao – that have been dotted with many tourist spots.

When Meghalaya was formed, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao opted to stay put with Assam, instead of taking the side of Meghalaya. Now the same people have been demanding a state within the State. The two hill districts have been dotted with a number of tourist spots. They need development – MLA

The House discussed issues relating to the two hill districts on Friday under the Speaker’s Initiative Programme. Taking part in the discussion, many legislators said that the two districts needed to be accorded more importance, besides more autonomy.

Taking part in the discussion, BJP MLA Ranoj Pegu said: “Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong need more importance. When Meghalaya was formed, these two hill districts opted to stay put with Assam, instead of taking the side of Meghalaya. Now the same people have been demanding a state within the State. The two hill districts have been dotted with a number of tourist spots. They need development.”

MLAs Mansing Rongpi, BB Hagjer, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and others took part in the discussion. The State Government is going to file a report on Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao later based on Friday’s discussion in the Assembly.
