GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Wednesday announced that the Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha award, 2020 would be conferred on noted artist Kandarpa Nath Sarma and reknowned danseuse and actress Jharna Saikia.

The award will be conferred upon Kandarpa Nath Sarma and Jharna Saikia by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on June 20 during the Rabha Diwas celebrations in Dibrugarh. The programme will be held as a part of the central celebrations of the diwas under the Directorate of Cultural Affairs with assistance from the Dibrugarh District Administration. The award will carry cash of Rs 2 lakh, a memento and an angabastra each.

Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Rameswar Teli, Cultural Affair Minister Naba Kumar Doley, Minister of Tea Tribes Welfare Minister Sanjay Kishan, CM Media Advisor Hrishikesh Goswami, among others will be present during the programme.

Kandarpa Nath Sarma was born on 10 January, 1948 at Kamakhya, Guwahati. For most part of his life, he worked as a teacher in Government College of Art & Crafts and was its principal from the year 1991 to 1996.

Since 1970, Sarma's paintings have been a part of various exhibitions. Over the decades he has been showcasing his work at Guwahati Kamakhya Balok Prathomik Bidyalaya, Rabindra Bhawan, Cotton College, and State Art Gallery. His paintings have been a part of the Norway International Grafy Exhibition in 1993 and also Mumbai Jehangir Art Gallery.

Jharna Saikia was born on March 1, 1956 in Silchar. In 1974, she started her acting career from the movie Ratanlal. In 1975, she was recognized by the All India Dibrugarh Radio, in which she presented various dramas. She is known for performing folk dance across the Northeast. She has directed numerous dramas and plays and also wrote scripts for telefilms and documentaries.
