Assam assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary while participating in a Lachit Divas programme here on Wednesday said that the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan who defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 will become a fictional character if the new generation are not taught about the rich history of Assam.

GUWAHATI: Assam assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary while participating in a Lachit Divas programme here on Wednesday said that the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan who defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 will become a fictional character if the new generation are not taught about the rich history of Assam. He recalled the glorious past of Assam describing it as the "land of the braves".

Daimary was the chief guest at the Lachit Divas celebration programme near Fancy Bazar on the banks of the Brahmaputra.

Pointing out that the Mahabharata will not be complete without the mention of Assam, he spoke about the legendary characters of the epic like Bhagadatta, Narkasura and Ghatotkacha. He added that the new generation should be taught about the lives of brave men like Lachit Borphukan.

Guwahati MP Queen Oja who also spoke about the bravery of the Ahom general. She urged the up-and-coming generation to gather more knowledge about him.

Among the dignitaries present during the programme were Additional Chief Secretary Paban Kumar Borthakur, Tai scholar Dayananda Borgohain, Vice Chairman of Jyoti Chitraban -- Bidyasagar, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha.
