GUWAHATI: It was speculated that the so-called modernization of the entire police forces and the establishments of the police commissionerate in Guwahati will strengthen the vigilance against various anti-social elements. However, the city residents have been getting a polar experience. In a recent check made by The Sentinel at the Chandmari police station, the above statement has turned only a reality.

According to a source, presently, there is only one inspector, five sub-inspectors (SI) against the 12 sanctioned posts while there are only three assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) against the sanctioned posts of six. Moreover, there are no head-constables (HC), against a total of 10 sanctioned posts. Accordingly, the Chandmari police station has only 19 constables against the 70 sanctioned posts and no Naik (NK) against the sanctioned one post at all. However there are two women police constable (WPC), six home guards (HG), and two women home guards (WHG).

For the importance of its location, this police station receives the highest number of cases. This apart, MLAs, top-level bureaucrats and other heavyweights lodge their complaints mostly in this police station.

According to official records, in 2018 as many as 1204 cases were registered in this police station, 1121 in 2017, 967 in 2016 and 849 in 2015. The trend of lodging complaints in the police station is increasing. According to insiders, most of the cases are of cheating that generally come under section 420, crime against property, thefts, family disputes, accidents etc.
