LDFA protests against CAB as winter session of Parliament begins

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Centre is ready to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the ensuing winter session of Parliament starting from Monday; Assam has become the vantage point of protests.

Left Democratic Front, Assam (LDFA), the conglomerate of a few parties such as CPI-M, CPI, CPI(ML), JD(S), NCP, Assam Sangrami Mancha, AAP, Liberal Democratic Party, and RCPI will stage a protest against the CAB in the city on Monday.

“It is evident that the central government would try its level best to pass CAB in the Parliament. Therefore, it had become a matter of serious concern for the North East and Assam to demonstrate their resentment against this move, and what better way than to protest on the very day when the winter session begins on Monday,” an office-bearer of LDFA said.

He said granting citizenship to those entered the country after March 31, 1971, would be not only unconstitutional but also against the fundamental spirit of the Assam Accord. “Giving someone the right to enjoy citizenship of the country on the basis of religion is a communal act. So, the CAB is also against the secular ethos of India,” the office-bearer said.
