Lockdown proved counterproductive: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the lockdown imposed in different parts of Assam, including in Guwahati city, has proved to be counterproductive in containing the pandemic.

"In spite of strict lockdown the number of patients have been increasing by leaps and bound along with the number of deaths 36 till now. Besides, it has also brought immense hardships to poor and common people who are losing jobs and livelihoods. In addition, common men have to pay high price for daily used items like vegetables due to inefficient handling by the Food and Civil Supplies department as well as the police, indulging corrupt practices. Since the entire world is going for unlock and PM also who earlier championed for the strict implementation of lockdown realizes its negative impact has now shifted responsibilities to State government and started talking of unlocking. Unfortunately State government in order to cover up its failure to provide more COVID test, chasing, treatment facilities in a planned manner besides failure to strictly enforce restriction such as wearing masks, frequent hand washing by sanitizer, maintain social distance etc has imposed the lockdown," he said.

"Lockdown is not a solution according to experts but hard immunity is the real solution that can be achieved only by either inventing vaccine or drugs or 75% people get infected. In such a situation further extension of lockdown in Guwahati or other places of Assam will be nothing but a foolish idea which will bring disaster both in pandemic as well as bringing hardships and sufferings of the common people particularly poor and vulnerable," the former Chief Minister said in a statement.
