GUWAHATI: Acting on a tipoff from the 108 Service, Sonapur Police recovered Hemanta Mandal (35 years of age) lying in an unconscious state with grievous head injuries, from his garage near Digaru Chariali under Sonapur Police Station within Guwahati Commissionerate, on Wednesday night. The victim was immediately shifted to the Sonapur District Hospital. But the doctor on duty declared him "brought dead". The victim is a son of Rabindranath Mandal of Jhargaon Village under Mayang Police Station, Morigaon.

Inquiries by the Police revealed that the accused culprit is Rakesh Karmakar (26 years of age; and son of Geju Karmakar; Village No 2 Baruabari under Sonapur Police Station in Kamrup-Metro district). Karmakar was engaged as a night chowkidar of the garage by Hemanta Mandal.

Police source informed that the accused person — Rakesh Karmakar — had assaulted the victim with a hammer, because of which the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, Police has apprehended the accused and also recovered the weapon he had used to murder Mandal. During the course of grilling, the accused confessed to the Police that he had committed the crime. During questioning, the accused further claimed that he had been frequently insulted by the deceased. Karmakar also confessed before the Police to committing the crime. An FIR has been lodged by the father of the deceased and accordingly Sonapur PS Case No 574/2021; U/s- 302 IPC registered. Necessary legal action is continuing.
