NEMSU alleges short distribution of materials to beneficiaries in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: North-East Minorities Students’ Union (NEMSU) on Monday alleged the Directorate of Char Areas Development Assam of not meeting the targets in the distribution of materials to the beneficiaries.

Addressing a press meet here, on Monday NEMSU president Badrul Islam said that according to an RTI report, in the financial year 2017-18 and 2018-19, a total of Rs. 45.36 crore was allotted to the Directorate of Char Areas by the Assam government. According to Islam, the report states that in the year 2017-18, Rs. 21.60 crore was allotted. With the allotted money, 1479 handpumps were to be set up in the Char area out of which only 763 handpumps were distributed. Out of 3,686 homes, solar lights only 1530 were given to the beneficiaries. The government had asked to allot 561 e-rickshaws; but, only 90 were distributed. For the year 2018-19, Islam said that 12,000 bicycles, 3,250 sewing machines, 4,734 home solar lights, 1,470 handpumps, and 16,835 umbrellas were distributed; however, the name and address of the beneficiaries were not provided in the RTI. Speaking further, Islam appealed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to set up a high-level inquiry into this matter. He said NEMSU will register a case with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department and also organize a protest during the upcoming State Assembly session at Dispur.
