New Livestock breeds of Assam registered by National Bureau of Animal Genetics Resources

GUWAHATI: National Bureau of Animal Genetics Resources (NBAGR) Karnal, Haryana has registered the swamp buffaloes and local goats of Assam as two new distinct breeds of Livestock.

The swamp buffaloes of Assam have been registered as ‘LUIT’ and the local goats as ‘Assam Hill Goat’. LUIT and the Assam Hill Goat are the 14th and 31st registered breed of goat and buffalo breeds of the country. The breed registration certificates were awarded by Union Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister, Radha Mohan Singh in presence of Ministers of State (Agriculture) Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Krishna Raj and Purusuttam Rupala to Gopal Chandra Das and Galib Uz Zaman for LUIT buffalo and Naba Nahardeka, Galib UZ Zaman and Abdus Saleque for Assam Hill Goat in a ceremony held on December 12 at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. The scientists of Faculty of Veterinary Science, Assam Agriculture University, Khanapara have previously registered the Doom pig, local cattle as ‘LAKHIMI’ and duck as ‘PATI DUCK’ last year. Altogether seven different livestock breeds of the State of Assam have been registered so far as distinct breeds of the State of Assam, a press release stated.
