GUWAHATI: An executive meeting of the Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) held on Sunday decided to organize a series of agitations from October 7 to press for their demand to do away with the New Pension System (NPS) and restore the Old Pension Scheme. Terming itself as the only organization representing the teachers, officials and employees of the Assam Government, the SAKP released a press statement signed by its president Dwipen Sarma and secretary Dilip Kalita, in which they stated that till the month of September, a total of 2,72,971 employees have been appointed under NPS while 9,151 have retired from service. They receive amounts ranging from Rs 700 to Rs 2700 under the new policy, which was rolled out across the nation. The statement says that the amounts are very meager and the retired employees are very disappointed.

Pension is not a government hand-out but a right of the employees, according to Dwipen Sarma. It is the duty of the government to protect the future of its employees and this can be done by keeping in place the old pension scheme, he added. “Several states in the country have already done away with NPS, in favour of OPS,” Sarma said.

Giving details of their agitation programme, the office-bearers of SAKP said that sit-ins would be organized in district and subdivision headquarters on October 7, starting from 11 AM and ending at 2 PM. The duo appealed to all teachers, officials and employees to attend the demonstration. Moreover, on December 16, an agitation will be organized centrally in Guwahati, they informed. On February 1, 2024, there will be total stoppage of work at all government offices, they added.
