Guwahati: Owing to the rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra river, the plying of all kinds of boats and ferry services has been suspended from May 28 to May 31 in Kamrup Metropolitan district of the State. 

"The water level of Brahmaputra in Kamrup Metropolitan district is rising and forecasted to be risen above danger level within 2-3 days, plying of ferry service in such situation may cause untoward incidents which may cause untoward incidents which may lead to threat to the lives and properties of the public in general", said a notice issued from the office of the Additional District Magistrate and CEO of the Kamrup Metropolitan district.

It may be mentioned here that earlier today, the Government issued an alarm In Guwahati, the buzzing economic epicentre of the state, the river is resting at 48.76 metres, while the danger level is 49.68 metres. Meanwhile, the Bharalu river has swelled to 48.65 metres.

Meanwhile, the floods have turned critical amid torrential rains in the state. 2,94,170 people across 9 Assam districts of Dhemaji, Nagaon, Hojai, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia have been affected by floods in Assam during the first spate this year and 15,977 people have been driven to take shelter in 91 relief camps. Additionally, 1 more person from Goalpara was killed in the last 24 hours. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ADSMA) daily report.

Goalpara district is the worst affected as 2,01,347 people across 161 villages have been affected by floods. At the same time, 21,572 hectares of crops in 8 districts have been affected in this spate of floods. Teams have already been deployed by the Government to rescue the flood-affected people, and so far, 24 boats have deployed and 492 persons have been rescued.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed all Deputy Commissioners to set up separate cells to carry out relief and rescue operations expeditiously during flood. He recently observed that the district administrations have already geared up with all preparations to deal with flood and said that they have been directed to provide all possible support to the people affected by flood.
