Police are always on their toes, let alone Republic Day: Munna Prasad Gupta

GUWAHATI: On the security scenario in Guwahati in the run-up to the Republic Day celebrations, the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati Munna Prasad Gupta has said that every moment is a challenge for a police personnel, let alone January 26.

Talking to The Sentinel on the security scenario in Guwahati, Gupta said, “We want to rope in all citizens’ committees in matters related to security in Guwahati. We’ve already held meetings with citizens’ committees at the police commisionerate level. Such meetings are now going on at the police station level. Other policies regarding policing are also underway. Naka checking, patrolling, etc are going on. Patrolling and search operations are going on in all hill areas in the city. If antisocial elements are found there, action will be initiated against them as per the law.”

On the two recent murders in Guwahati – Paresh Chandra Baruah of Dispur Law College Road on January 7 and Porshuram Chaurasia at Lutuma Battalion Gate on January 16 – the police commissioner said, “We’ve got CCTV footages. The cases will be solved soon. Some cases take time. We’re trying to nab the actual culprits.”

On criminals from outside Assam committing crimes in Guwahati, Gupta said, “Criminals always play newer tricks. We need to be cautious not to allow them to enjoy an edge over us.”

On frequent snatching of cash in the city, Gupta said, “The bank authorities have been cautioned to make their CCTV and security systems ready. We’ve held meetings with bank authorities and sensitized them. In case of transfer of cash, they should let us know so that we can provide them security personnel.”

When asked on the security measures taken up in the city for the Republic Day, he said, “Naka checking and patrolling are going at all entry and exit points of Guwuhati. There are always apprehensions of threat in the run-up to the Republic Day. However, there is nothing specific this year. The police are always on their toes, let alone for the Republic Day. The security setup at Khanapara Playground has been tightened.”
