Residents oppose new Kamakhya-Jogighopa Railway track in Jalukbari

Residents of Jalukbari area have sent a memorandum to PM Modi urging to withdraw the proposed second Kamakhya-Jogighopa Railway Track

GUWAHATI: Residents of Jalukbari area have sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging to withdraw the proposed second "Kamakhya-Jogighopa Railway Track" site area falling within the wider campus of Krishna Kanta Handique Government Sanskrit College situated at Sundarbari.

The residents have appealed to the Prime Minister to consider for setting up the track at other suitable area ideally on the Eastern side of the Existing Railway Track so that considerable distance from the college campus and other institutions is maintained to avoid sound pollution that will inevitably vitiate the peaceful and good academic environment.

The memorandum stated, "A substantial portion of the said Sanskrit college land area have been included inside the railway land and thus the construction work of the railway line has been proposed to be completed. After setting up of the line, it shall be a busy route as several important trains will be allowed to pass through the said new proposed railway line at high frequency time gap which will disturb the peaceful environment of the college campus and vitiate seriously the academic."

The memorandum said that thousands of local residents, whose houses are situated in and around the campus of the said Sanskrit College will inevitably suffer serious problems if the extended portion of the railway line is allowed to be constructed occupying the frontage land of the said college.

Along with the Prime Minister, the residents have sent a copy of the memorandum to the Railway Minister, Assam Chief Minister, Assam Education Minister, and Guwahati Parliamentary Constituency MP Queen Oja. On Tuesday, the residents also submitted a copy of the memorandum to the general manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
