Select new leader of Opposition: Congress

GUWAHATI: The newly-elected MLAs of the Congress have authorized the party high command to select the new leader of the Opposition.

After the declaration of polls results, the newly-elected MLAs held a meeting which was also attended by senior leaders of the party including APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) in-charge Jitendra Singh.

During the meeting, the MLAs and party senior leaders took a written resolution to authorize the top brass of the party to select the next leader of the Opposition. It is to be noted that the legislature party leader of the Opposition political party which secures one-sixth of the total number of seats in the State Assembly is given the status of the Leader of Opposition.

In respect of Assam, a party has to secure 21 seats out of the total 126 seats to be eligible for the Status. The Congress in the recently held polls secured a total of 29 seats. In the last 14th Assembly, Debabrata Saikia maintained the status of the leader of the Opposition till February 2021.
