Sensitization on landslide risk mitigation

GUWAHATI, May 18: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in collaboration with DDMA, Kamrup (M) has been undertaking a comprehensive 40 Nos of month-long awareness campaign on Landslide Risk Mitigation aiming to reach all the 20 hillocks of Guwahati City involving the residents of the respective localities. The first sensitization meeting was held on May 17 at Garbhanga Hillock, Beharbari. Kick starting the campaign, Meenakshi Das Nath, Joint Secretary and State Project Coordinator, ASDMA said “While landslides are occurring unabated, there is an urgent need for taking a holistic approach towards landslide risk mitigation both at short term and long term basis and Campaigns like this is a major Step towards this direction. I seek cooperation from the people living in the hilly region to support the campaign.”

This programme is being conducted in association with Geological Survey of India, GMC, Soil Conservation Department, Forest Department, Fire & Emergency Services, IIT(G), Geology Department Cotton College, Community Radio- Jnan Taranga (90.4) and Radio Luit (90.8). Community Radio will also play an integral part in the sensitization programme wherein they will design the Community Learning Programmes through a community participatory method which will involve Focus group discussion, expert comments etc.ans also carry out impact assessment of the campaign.
