GUWAHATI: The Sadou Guwahati Griha Karmi Union (SGGKU) raised the demand for financial aid to domestic workers, women laborurers and daily-wage earners on Wednesday as they are the ones worst affected by the lockdown.

The union demanded for financial assistance along with essential goods for these people so that they and their families can survive this critical situation as all their sources of income have been closed. The union claimed that expecting financial assistance, the people who worked as domestic workers along with those engaged in unorganized sectors had submitted forms in the Labour Department in the month of March, but they received nothing. The union further claimed that it is unsure whether any people have received any kind of aid as mentioned by the government since the lockdown was announced and all kinds of travelling was closed.

In a statement to the media, the Union Secretary Ambalika Sarma and the president of SGGKU said, "We demand minimum Rs. 7,500 as per government norms for all those included in the list of Griha Karmi Union and to provide essential goods to all those families who don't have ration cards. The union demands the government to publicly release the names of those who might have received any kind of aid from the government." "Due to lockdown the life of domestic workers along with the street vendors and those engaged as sweepers or in different works in offices, hotels and restaurants have turned difficult, leading them to life full of tension, anxiety and uncertainty. So we demand financial aid and essential goods for those people. Or else women Griha Karmi Union members will resort to protest," the union stated.
