GUWAHATI: Sony and World Photography organization announced the national winners of their prestigious Sony Photography Awards recently. And Assam has reasons to celebrate as a photographer from Guwahati, Shreejit Borthakur's work has brought laurels to the State.

Every year, the Awards recognize local photographic talent from around the world and exhibit their works to a global audience. The 2021 awards identified winners from over 50 countries from a total pool of over 165,000 photographs.

Shreejit Borthakur's image was selected as the single best image taken by any photographer of Indian nationality and living in India, entered to the Open competition of the Sony World Photography Awards.

Shreejit, a resident of Guwahati, won the award for an artistic rendition of a photograph of an Asiatic Water Buffalo, an endangered species. The photograph was taken at Pobitora, a wildlife sanctuary in Morigaon district of Assam known for the highest density of one-horned rhinoceros in the world.

Shreejit, who is a hobbyist photographer, says "It's an honour to have won the award for a photograph from Assam. The tricky part was that only photographs taken in the year 2020 could be submitted to the competition. Given the restrictions of Covid-19, I could not travel a lot in the year, and this photograph was taken towards the end of the year on December 25th."

As a part of the award, Shreejit receives the latest digital imaging equipment from Sony and national and global exposure.
