GUWAHATI: The Pratibandhi Suraksha Sanstha, Assam (PSSA) has alleged that the State Health and Family Welfare Department has ‘deceived’ the people with disabilities (PwDs) in the ongoing process for the selection of 403 candidates to fill up vacancies in the medical colleges in the State.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, PSSA secretary Nripen Malakar said, “On January 23, 2020 the department advertised for the filling up 403 vacancies in different medical colleges in the State, but did not make any mention of the four per cent reserved posts for people with disabilities in accordance with the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. That led us to submit a memorandum to the DME (Director of Medical Education) on the issue. However, the DME paid no heed to our memorandum, leading us to register protest on February 11, 2020. In the evening on that day, the Additional Director of Medical Education received our memorandum and gave a written statement that the matter will be solved through consultation with the Commissioner-Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare within ten days. However, 13 days have already been elapsed but nothing tangible has been done as yet on the matter.” Malakar has demanded the minister concerned to intervene into the matter and solve it within 48 hours, failing which the PSSA will have to take to the streets.
