State gears up to hold panchayat polls by Jan 15

GUWAHATI, Oct 10: Following a directive from the Gauhati High Court, the State Election Commission (SEC) is now ready to conduct the panchayat polls in the State. Though the local polls were to be held in the early part of 2018, owing to certain practical problems, it was deferred. However, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday issued a directive to the SEC to complete all the processes of the panchayat polls by January 15, 2019.

Talking to The Sentinel, SEC Commissioner HN Bora said, “Though we have not yet got the certified copy of Gauhati High Court’s order, the government advocate has already informed us about the high court’s directive to complete the panchayat polls by January 15, 2019. The electoral roll is ready and so is the seat reservation process. The Government has already sanctioned us the monetary support. We’ll be able to conduct the process within the timeframe.”

This time 50% of the seats in the local polls would be reserved for women. There are 2,200 gaon panchayats in Assam. The five-year terms of all these GPs are over.
