Students Protest Against Controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

GUWAHATI: The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2016 was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, much to the disagreement of the bulk crowd of Assam. The Bill has been tagged as ant-Assamese and against the interests of the indigenous people of Assam. Student Unions of various universities and colleges of Assam have expressed their angst over the matter in various forms.

Post Graduate Students Union (PGSU) of Dibrugarh University (PGSU) has thoroughly condemned the move of the government. PGSU President, Mridul Gogoi stated in a press release, “Students of Dibrugarh University along with 100 other colleges under it will protest because we cannot accept the Bill imposed upon us.” A protest demonstration was organized against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2016, by the Community of Guwahati University. The President in-charge of Guwahati University Teacher’s Association, Dwipen Bezbarua said, “The protest is in demand for withdrawal of the Bill. The Bill is completely undemocratic.”

The Cotton University Students Union (CUSU) has also condemned the Bill and has started an infinite boycott on classes from Wednesday. Prior to the protest, a meeting among all the universities and colleges of Guwahati was held where a united decision of remonstration against the Bill was confirmed. Students of the University staged a sit-in protest before the gate of the University.

B Borooah College, Saraighat College, Saraighat College (Changsari), Pub Kamrup College Student’s Union and Dakhin Kamrup College Student’s Union have decided to stage an infinite boycott of classes to showcase their agitation against the controversial Bill.
