Permission for mining in Saleki

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the Government of Assam, the Central government and CIL (Coal India Ltd) to submit their respective affidavits by July 14, 2020 on the permission given for coal mining in the proposed Saleki reserve forest which is part of Dehing-Patkai Elephant Reserve.

Two PILs (Public Interest Litigations) were filed against the permission for coal mining in Saleki. The High Court also took suo motto cognizance of the issue and registered a PIL. All the three PILs were heard on Thursday.

Hearing the PILs, Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice Soumitra Saikia asked the State Government, the Central Government and the CIL to submit their respective affidavits on the issue by July 14. The next date for hearing of the case is July 20, 2020.

Meanwhile, in a release issued to the press on Thursday, the State government said that the division bench headed by the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court 'stayed away from passing any interim order while directing both the Central and State Governments to submit all documents relevant to the matter. Though the appellants' advocate sought stay order on all mining activities in Dehing Patkai, public prosecutor informed that there were no mining activities going on presently in the area and hence, there was no need of passing any stay or an interim order to that effect'.
