Talks on for 14th Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker

GUWAHATI: The 14th Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) is going to have its Deputy Speaker for the third consecutive time. The ruling BJP leadership is holding parleys with the party’s national top brass to select a new legislator for the coveted post.

Dilip Kumar Paul, a BJP MLA from Silchar became the First Deputy Speaker of the current ALA in 2016. He resigned from the post on May 8, 2018, citing personal reasons. After Paul BJP MLA from Ratabari constituency, Kripanath Mallah took the charge of Deputy Speaker. Mallah had to quit from the post after he was elected as an MP from Karimganj constituency in May this year.

The State BJP leadership is now holding discussions with the party’s top brass in Delhi to select another ruling party MLA for the post of Deputy Speaker during the ensuing monsoon session of the ALA commencing from July 26.

The 14th ALA has already seen two Speakers. The first Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass had to quit the post after he was elected as the State BJP president. Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami succeeded Dass for the Speaker post.
