GUWAHATI: The violation of social distancing has been rampant in many areas Guwahati. Neither shopkeepers, nor their customers respect the social distancing norms. According to sources, the State government is contemplating on taking stringent measures against those violating the safety norms as the trend is on the rise.

Common violations are not wearing face masks, going out to the market taking children, people of over 65 years of age going out, not following social distancing norms etc.

With over 50 people being detected corona positive in Guwahati where a number of areas have been declared as containment zones, such violations of social distancing may cost the people of the metropolitan city dearly.

This reporter visited a number of areas in the city like Kahilipara, Lal Ganesh, Hatigaon-Bhetapara, Beltola etc. Most of the shops in these areas don't keep the mandatory bucketful of water with soaps for hand washing and sanitizers. With the passage of time and relaxation of lockdown, shops in these areas are least bothered to stick to social distancing norms.

When this reporter asked a shop keeper as to why he has not kept water ready in his shop for washing hands by his customers, he simply said, "The bucketful of water he had brought got exhausted."

When asked as to why no soap or sanitizer is kept ready, he instantly bought soap and sanitizer.

There are even vendors selling vegetables and fish on footpaths without following social distancing norms. During this Ramzan month, people are also seen crowding in garment shops. Neither shop owners nor their customers respect the social distancing norms. If the administration doesn't take stringent measures on social distancing the market in Guwahati will soon be back to square one, and COVID-19 may reach the community transmission stage sooner than later.
