GUWAHATI: Heavy rains lashed Guwahati, leading to waterlogging and landslides in multiple parts of the city on Thursday.

Residents found it tough to commute due to a flood-like situation and people were stuck outside for hours. Waterlogging was reported on Zoo Road, Beltola, Chandmari, Guwahati Club, Maligaon, Gorchuk and other places in the city.

The hours-long downpour triggered landslides at – Maligaon, Santipur, Fatasil Ambari and Kamakhya and several houses were damaged.

Locals of Kailashpur, Fatasil Ambari stated that they have had complained to the administration regarding the overpopulation in their area which has led to landslides.

Their statement came after a landslide damaged a house in the area on Thursday evening.

"The area cannot accommodate more than 500 people. People are illegally constructing houses by cutting down the mountain. Now, around 2,000 people are living in this area. We have appealed numerous times to the administration not to allow construction of second and third floors. But till now we have not received any support and people are erecting three-storey buildings," said a local.
